Census Needs Thousands of People in Twin Cities Metro Area to Fill Jobs

The U. S. Census Bureau will hire thousands of people in the Twin Cities Metro Area between now and next spring. This strong economic shot in the arm is like having several factories open up in this area! Up to a total of approximately 4,000 people will be on staff during peak times.

"This is the largest civilian mobilization of workers in the history of the United States" said Dennis Johnson, Regional Director.

These are good paying, temporary jobs for the field positions of Recruiters, Crew Leaders, Field Supervisors, Census Takers and Census Clerks. Amount of pay depends on position and location. Work related mileage is reimbursed. There may be some opportunities for advancement.

Positions are available in every community.

The U. S. Census Bureau encourages interested persons to apply for these jobs by calling the Toll Free Jobs Line at 1-866-861-2010.

Are you an artist? Design a poster for the 2010 Census!

Design a poster to encourage participation in the 2010 Census in Rice County, Minnesota. Submit your design by Feb. 22, 2010 to be eligible for a $200 prize, to be announced March 1, 2010.

Since federal and state funding for many programs is calibrated to census numbers, accurate counts provide equitable funding. Yet many immigrants, and those in temporary housing, are not counted.

The Winning Poster Design will be printed and widely distributed around Rice County during March 2010, when forms are distributed for the April deadline.

Content: Text and images will encourage all residents to fill in the census form and be counted. The census aims to count everyone regardless of legal status and results are confidential. Languages: English, Spanish or Somali. Design and message should be cultural appropriate to the target group.

Inspiration: Consult poster designs in the Carleton College Art Gallery exhibition, Latin American Posters, on view through March 11, 2010, and, Sampling the Census: Snapshots of the American Population, 1880-2010. Census Publications in Gould Library Government Documents, on view in Carleton’s Gould Library.

For more information on the Census outreach effort, and to view sample posters by Census Bureau designers, visit the Census 2010 website.
Design Submission Deadline: February 22

Complete Count Committees Key to a Successful Census in 2010 (PDF 109K)

Every 10 years, as mandated by the U.S. Constitution, our nation conducts a census — an effort to count every person living in the United States. This multibillion-dollar operation requires years of planning and more than a half million temporary workers. The key to this endeavor is having every household fill out and mail back a completed census form.

The 2010 Census and the American Community Survey America is Changing, and so is the Census (PDF 106K)

One of the most significant changes in modern census history will occur in 2010 — for the first time since 1930, all addresses in the U.S. will receive a census short form. In recent censuses, most addresses received one of two forms: either the short form, which focused on the population count and demographics; or the long form, which included additional questions on socioeconomic and housing characteristics.
