Minnesota State ID: Renewal

Minnesota State ID's are renewable every four years on the date of the resident’s birthday.

How to apply

Apply in person for renewal at any Hennepin County Service Center.  For a shorter wait time make an appointment. Bring the following:

• A Minnesota driver's license, instruction permit, or state identification card that is current or has been expired for no more than five (5) years (if it has a photo) or no more than one (1) year (if it is without a photo).
• If you do not have one of these items, you must present one primary and one secondary form of identification from this list of Identification Requirements (PDF 54kb). The primary document must contain your full legal name (first, middle, and last) and the month, day, and year of your birth.
• Your social security number
• If you are under 18 - a parent or guardian with proper identification

$17.25 - under 65
$11- 65 and over

Additional information

• Your new state ID will be mailed to you in four to six weeks.
• Carry your current identification and the stamped yellow receipt you receive when you apply until it arrives.
• Minnesota State IDs expire every four years on your birthday.
