Coming changes to the corridor
The 2025 repaving project will bring a smooth and safe surface for years to come. We will also restripe the road to close a four-block bikeway gap to create continuous dedicated bike lanes on 42nd Street. The continuous bikeway will improve safety, comfort and predictability for all road users.
To close the bike gap, we will be removing on-street parking on the north side of 42nd Street between 26th and 30th avenues. East of Cedar Avenue striping will be updated with additional parking spots on the south side and some parking removals on the north side.
These changes were developed with input from local business owners and community members over the past 18 months, including at an open house in August 2024.
Project background
42nd Street between Cedar Avenue and Minnehaha Avenue is due for repaving. Other nearby segments have also been repaved and improved in recent years.
It’s also an important street for multimodal options, as both city and county plans identify 42nd Street in Minneapolis as a bikeway. In addition, it is on the city’s All Ages and Abilities Network as a near-term low-stress bikeway.
There are currently bike lane gaps on 42nd Street between Cedar and 19th avenues and from 26th to 30th avenues. People biking share a lane with people driving motor vehicles and there is on-street parking on both sides at locations along the corridor.
