Potential changes to the corridor
As part of the repaving project, the county and City of Minneapolis are evaluating the benefits and trade-offs of providing a continuous bike facility in both directions by removing parking from one side of 42nd Street between Cedar Avenue to 19th Avenue and between 26th and 30th avenues, or retaining the current condition with parking in both directions and vehicles and bikes sharing the travel lane.
Project engagement
We will be reaching out to residents and business along the corridor to collect your input and answer your questions about the repaving and potential restriping options.
As part of our engagement process, the project team is hosting an open house to gather feedback about the proposed striping changes. Come and go as you are able and ask the project team questions about the potential changes.

Project background
City and county plans identified 42nd Street in Minneapolis as a bikeway; it is on the city’s All Ages and Abilities Network as a near-term low-stress bikeway. Most of the 42nd Street being repaved in 2025 has on-street bike lanes in each direction and parking on the south side of the street. There are existing bike lane gaps from Cedar Avenue to 19th Avenue and from 26th to 30th avenues where bikes share a lane with traffic and on-street parking is provided on both sides at the neighborhood business nodes.
While the repaving project cannot create a low-stress bikeway, there is an opportunity to create continuous dedicated bike lanes, with a trade-off being the removal of on-street parking on one side of 42nd Street. Concepts being considered from 26th to 30th avenues include:
- Replacing the striping as it is today with on-street parking on both sides of 42nd Street and vehicles and bikes sharing the travel lane
- Removing on-street parking from the north side of 42nd Street and adding bike lanes in each direction
- Removing on-street parking from the south side of 42nd Street and adding bike lanes in each direction
Project timeline
The planning and design stages for the repaving are expected to wrap up by fall 2024. Implementation will occur during the 2025 construction season with short-term one-direction closures. Dates are subject to change.
